A Pastor Reflects:

An Ongoing Interview with Randy Riggs

by Tracey Marx

Randy Riggs, senior pastor at 1st Presbyterian Church, Lancaster PA will retire from ministry in the summer of 2012, after 40 years as a pastor.  Over this next year, each month, he will be sharing his reflections with us, in answer to twelve questions.  As you read his thoughts, perhaps they will prompt reflection on your own ministry and your own journey.  How has your perspective changed?  How have you grown and developed as a pastor?  How would you answer each of these questions?

Copyright Law and Your Policy Book

With tremendous resources available on the internet, the issue of Copyright Law comes front and center. ALL churches should have a written Copyright policy that is distributed to all who have access to the copier and who write for the church’s publications. In addition, the policy should name “by position” who is responsible to monitor the policy. Just a few of the issues include:

  • Church software: One program, one computer—no exceptions. If the software is to be used on multiple computers, special licensing is required. A copy cannot be made for home use unless the license so states.

  • Websites: Is everything on your website your original work or does it include artwork, clip art, articles, photos taken from the internet? The works of others may not be used without permission from the creator.

  • Videos rented from a local video store are intended only for private home use. These videos may not be used for any group or organization in the church.

Churches may purchase a blanket license for music and videos. Details of this and all of the above are taken from “Copyright Law: What Every Church Must Know” which is available at the PRC.
